Delhi successfully combines ancient and modern. Its strategic location was the main reason successive dynasties chose it as their seat of power. In fact, it is believed that there are more mythological cities here, such as the city of Indraprastha from the Hindu epic Mahabharata, founded around 5000 BC. Numerous monuments were built over the course of several centuries by various rulers such as Qutub-ud-din Aibek, Alauddin Khilji, Tughlaqi, Humayun and Shah Jahan, who built the fortress city of Shah Jahanabad.
Later, in the first half of the 20th century, much of New Delhi was laid out by Sir Edwin Lutyens, who laid out the grandiose central administrative region as evidence of British rule in India. The division between the walled city and New Delhi also marks a division in lifestyles.
